SAMHAIN is an ancient Irish festival marking the beginning of winter. It also signified the end of the harvest season and traditionally it is celebrated on the 31st October. During Samhain, the ‘spirits’ could enter our world more easily. This was a very dangerous and scary time; gifts were made for the spirits in the hope that they would help the farmers survive the dark winter. This festival was an important precursor to Halloween.
Nowadays young and old decorate the house, wear scary costumes and play traditional games on Halloween in Ireland. Because the Irish celebrate in style, SOCI Hub and CSDS have decided to hold an Irish Halloween event! Guests will have the chance to play games such as ‘snap apple’; An apple is suspended from a string and the participant arms’ are tied behind their back and are blindfolded. The first participant to get a bite of the apple gets a prize! There will also be a sing-song, delicious food and no Irish party would be complete without some dancing! A costume contest will take place so guests will get the chance to be creative and make their own scary costume!
